I am delighted to have been asked to be the inaugural President of the Uplands Alliance. The Uplands may only cover 17% of our land mass but are disproportionately important to what it means to be English – and indeed British. They encompass our most loved landscapes, from the Lakes in the West to the North York Moors in the East, from the Cheviots in Northumberland to Bodmin in Cornwall and many wonderful areas in between. The challenge is that now they are too often contested spaces as the demand for what they add to more and more peoples’ lives increases.
The Alliance brings together practitioners, policy makers and researchers. We are creating a ‘policy lab’ to maximise outputs from current programmes and to develop together new approaches for the future.
My own work and interests include estate management, farming, nature conservation, and business. With a bit of thought and imagination the Uplands can support all these and the communities who live there. Join us in making this a reality.
